One does not simply walk into Mordor… but perhaps one can dance.

For anyone who has ever wondered what a night in the Shire might feel like, a journey to Middle-earth is arriving in Brisbane this winter — and no ring of power is required.

An evening of medieval and English folk dance inspired by The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and the world of Middle Earth will invite guests to step away from the ordinary and into a world of hobbits, elves, wizards and adventure. Rather than battling orcs or climbing Mount Doom, visitors will be taking part in lively dances designed to capture the warmth, fun and fellowship of Tolkien’s world.

The evening promises easy-to-learn dances suitable for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned dancer or someone who has never set foot on a dance floor. Organisers say the focus is firmly on fun, friendship and shared experience — the sort of atmosphere that would feel perfectly at home at Bilbo Baggins’ birthday celebrations.

Middle-earth attire is encouraged, with guests invited to embrace their inner hobbit, ranger, wizard or elf, although costumes are entirely optional. No partner is needed either, meaning solo adventurers, groups of friends and entire fellowships are equally welcome.

The event is being presented by Australian Historical Dance, the community group behind The Village Dance at Samford and Arana Hills, which regularly brings historical dance traditions to modern audiences through themed social events and live music. Music on the evening will be provided by Phillip’s Dog.

The event will be held on Saturday, 27 June 2026, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at The Hills Community Hall, 291 Dawson Parade, Arana Hills. Entry is $10.
