Set in February 1942, the narrative unfolds on the eve of young Christy O’Mahon’s departure to Sydney to commence his studies for the priesthood. The O’Mahon family, proud of their Irish heritage, hosts a farewell gathering filled with lamingtons and sing-alongs. However, beneath the surface of this celebratory occasion lie the complexities of faith, duty, and the looming shadows of World War II.
As the evening progresses, the family confronts challenging truths, revealing the strains and resilience inherent in their relationships.
The play is lauded for its rich portrayal of Irish-Australian humour and the nuanced depiction of familial bonds under pressure. Characters such as Mary O’Mahon, a romantic and dreamy figure grappling with her reality; Denny O’Mahon, her husband striving to keep the family united; and Tocky Keating, a devout yet bitter presence, contribute to the depth and authenticity of the story.
Performances will be held at Malvern Theatre, located at 29A Burke Road, East Malvern, Victoria. Each show runs for approximately two hours, including a 20-minute interval, during which complimentary tea, coffee, and biscuits will be served, with wine available for purchase.
