Irish clubs and community groups across Australia are celebrating Saint Brigid, the Matron Saint of Ireland, with a huge variety of events across the country.
The Wild Geese Hotel in Melbourne, home to the Celtic Club, and the Gaelic Club in Sydney are both rolling out the green carpet for lively St Brigid’s Day celebrations on 1st February.
At the Wild Geese Hotel, the festivities kick off early with full Irish breakfasts from 8am, followed by St Brigid’s cross-making for kids at 9am. The fun continues with a set dancing demonstration and live traditional music from 11am. Food lovers can indulge in the “Irish Queens of Cuisine” specials from 12pm to 8pm, inspired by Ireland’s finest female chefs, while feature cocktails, raffles, and spot prizes add to the excitement. Live performances by She Sings – The Sound of Ireland’s Women by Ambraya (2pm), Maggie Alley (7pm), Ella Sweeny (8pm), Harmony Blue (9pm), and Aunty Blue (10pm) will round out the day.
Meanwhile, the Gaelic Club in Sydney is hosting a St Brigid’s Day concert featuring award-winning concertina and flute player Doireann Nic Mhathúna, who is also a talented singer, dancer, and Irish language speaker. Joining her are special guests, including singer and flautist Caitlín Ní Mhéalóid, singer-songwriter Dominic Breen, and Doireann’s sister, professional musician Eithne Nic Mhathúna, direct from Ireland.
The concert begins at 7pm at the Gaelic Club, 64 Devonshire St, Surry Hills. Tickets are $30, with children admitted free.
St Brigid is the Matron Saint of Ireland. Her feast day is February 1st. She is also the saint of babies, printing presses and sailors.
St Brigid was born with a celestial radiance. Legends tell of a column of fire rising from her head. She performed miracles, including healing the sick. She founded Kildare Monastery, a centre of learning.
St Brigid obtained land for a convent from the King of Leinster by miraculously expanding her cloak to cover vast acres. People remember her by weaving St Brigid’s Crosses from bog reeds.
