As Glór na nGael – Voice of the Irish prepares to celebrate its 35th anniversary this November, the beloved Irish radio program on 3ZZZ Melbourne Ethnic Community Radio is undergoing a significant leadership transition. After 35 years of dedicated service, outgoing convenor Eugene O’Rourke OAM has stepped down, marking a momentous shift in the program’s history.

DATES & DEETS

Eugene, involved since the program’s inception in 1989, has been instrumental in building connections within Melbourne’s Irish community. His contribution, alongside volunteers like Graeme Anderson, who managed the operational side as treasurer, has been invaluable in keeping the program running smoothly.

At the Irish Broadcasting Group’s AGM in August, the leadership baton was passed to Karen Fogarty, the newly appointed convenor. She will be joined by a committed team including Mary Ann Farren as Deputy Convenor, Dominic McCann as Treasurer, and several other enthusiastic committee members. Together, they will guide Glór na nGael into its next chapter, ensuring the program continues its focus on Irish culture, language, and music.

“I’m honoured to take on the role of convenor alongside such a talented and committed team,” said Karen. “Together, we will continue to honour the incredible legacy of Glór na nGael while working to expand and modernise the program for future generations.”

The program will celebrate this leadership change and its 35th anniversary with an event on 10th November 2024, from 2pm to 5pm at Batman’s Hill on Collins, opposite Southern Cross Station.

It will feature music by Pat McKernan and Melbourne Comhaltas, cultural performances, and tributes to the many broadcasters and volunteers who have shaped Glór na nGael over the decades. The celebration will also acknowledge the immense contributions of Eugene and Graeme, marking the occasion as a time for reflection and gratitude.

Tickets cost: 3ZZZ Members $20, concessions $20, and general admission $25.This includes savoury and sweet finger food, coffee and tea, drinks at bar prices.

“We are grateful to Eugene, Graeme, and all the past and present broadcasters who have kept the Irish voice strong in Melbourne,” said Karen. “This anniversary event is a chance to celebrate their contributions and reflect on how much the program has meant to the Irish community.”
