Get ready for a theatrical treat as The Basin Theatre hosts the world premiere of Disorderly Women, a lively musical written and directed by Gillian Sealby. Making waves in Melbourne, this engaging production recounts the tumultuous journey of the Lady Juliana, the first female convict ship that sailed from England to Sydney Cove in 1789, known as the “floating brothel”.
The musical promises to be an uproarious celebration of the women aboard the Lady Juliana, blending heartache, fear, humour, and camaraderie with singalong tunes. Audiences will be transported back in time to witness the resilience and spirit of these feisty women, making a little money on the side while navigating their perilous voyage.
Performances are slated for the 10th and 11th of August at The Basin Theatre.
The production features the character of Mrs Elizabeth Barnsley, a real historical figure known as the Queen of Shoplifters, who was intelligent, literate, and flamboyant, bringing a vivid presence to the stage.
With content warnings for references to prostitution and capital punishment, along with mild swearing, Disorderly Women offers a raw and authentic look at the lives of these extraordinary women.
The Basin Theatre, a multi-award-winning Melbourne-based theatre company, is renowned for its high-quality productions and supportive community atmosphere, making it the perfect venue for this unique story.
