Get ready for a showstopper as it’s just been announced that a new ballet celebrating the legendary Dublin wit, Oscar Wilde, is set to take centre stage in Melbourne and Sydney next year.

This ballet promises to be a dazzling production, specially crafted for The Australian Ballet by the visionary choreographer Christopher Wheeldon.

Oscar Wilde was a sharp-tongued Irish poet and playwright who once took London’s high society by storm. His words were pure gold, and his wit was as quick as a fox. But, hold onto your top hats, because Wilde’s life was a rollercoaster of glamour, scandal, and triumph.

In 1895, he found himself at the heart of a sensational ‘celebrity trial,’ and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Wheeldon, known for his mesmerising choreography, has masterfully woven Wilde’s personal journey with his iconic tales into a dance extravaganza that’s set to leave you breathless.

With a sensational score by Joby Talbot and jaw-dropping costumes by Jean-Marc Puissant, Oscar promises to be a visual and auditory feast like no other.

The Australian Ballet last collaborated with Wheeldon on his award-winning musical, An American in Paris. His unique choreography makes him one of the most sought-after and highly regarded choreographers of his generation.

The ballet pulls back the curtain on Wilde’s life — his dazzling successes, his flirtations with moral ambiguity, and his ultimate fall from grace, which landed him behind bars. David Hallberg, the artistic genius behind The Australian Ballet, believes Wilde’s story still resonates today, reminding us of the importance of embracing our true selves.

Australian Ballet said on their website: “This story of an infamous dandy and his tales will be a sensational addition to our repertoire.”
