The Melbourne Writers Festival 2025 and the Sydney Writers’ Festival 2025 take place this month, with several prominent British and Irish authors appearing across the two programs.

DATES & DEETS

At Melbourne Writers Festival, Irish literary titan Colm Tóibín will appear, bringing his mastery of historical fiction and contemporary themes to the stage. Known for Brooklyn and The Magician, Tóibín’s session is expected to be a standout, particularly for fans of finely crafted Irish storytelling. Also appearing in Melbourne is Colum McCann, who will be in Australia to promote his new novel Twist — his first visit in 25 years. McCann is scheduled to feature at several literary events nationwide, with the Melbourne Writers Festival among them.

Scottish writer Douglas Stuart, author of the Booker Prize-winning Shuggie Bain, will also take part in the Melbourne Writers Festival, sharing insights into his powerful debut and his Glaswegian roots.

Both in Melbourne and at the Sydney Writers’ Festival, beloved Irish novelist Marian Keyes will bring her signature mix of warmth and wit to the program. With global bestsellers like Rachel’s Holiday and Again, Rachel, Keyes remains a cherished voice in contemporary fiction. Also at Sydney, Jeanette Winterson will mark 40 years since the release of her landmark novel Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, and Booker Prize winner Samantha Harvey will appear to discuss her acclaimed literary work.

Staying in Sydney, Colm Tóibín is scheduled to participate in discussions, including Making a Writer, where he will explore the state of literature alongside other prominent authors.
