Welcome to the April 2025 edition of Anglo&Celtic magazine. You can read or download the magazine free of charge at the link.
In this issue, we are celebrating England and Saint George’s Day. Our cover stars are Ian and Kim Chapman, owners of Kings Creek Winery in Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, where a great St George’s Day celebration is planned this month, including a Robbie Williams tribute.
There’s so much to love about England’s culture, but perhaps most of all, we love how they don’t take life too seriously, enjoy dressing up in daft costumes and have some of the wackiest festivals you could ever dream up!
Have a look at page 32 for details of festivals involving throwing knobs and black puddings, shin-kicking competitions and snail races. No surprises really from the country that spawned Monty Python.
Here in Australia, we are having St George’s Day celebrations too. You’ll find them detailed inside.
News has come out about Brisbane’s first Celtic Junior Games, happening next month, and after the success of the children’s competitions at the first Brisbane Celtic Festival in 2024, it’s sure to be a huge success.
At this year’s Bundanoon Highland Gathering, things will be getting welly out of hand — literally! A welly-throwing competition will see kilted warriors and gumboot-wielding daredevils take to the field, hurling rubber footwear. Whether you’re a seasoned tosser or just in it for the bootiful chaos, this is your chance to kick up some fun.
Finally, congratulations to the Irish community across Australia for spectacular St Patrick’s Day celebrations this year. They included Queensland Irish Association lighting up Brisbane City Hall in the colours of the Irish flag. And they suited it perfectly!
All the best, Mary.
