This festival commemorates the 1876 escape and rescue of six Irish Fenian political prisoners from Fremantle Prison, an event that remains one of the most successful prison breaks in history.
The heart of the story lies in the American whaling ship Catalpa, which smuggled the escapees to freedom after a daring operation on Rockingham Beach. The escape evaded British pursuit, weaving together a tale of ingenuity, courage, and international intrigue. The escapees received a heroes’ welcome from the Irish community on arrival to America.
This historical event, involving four nations, has grown into an iconic Western Australian celebration thanks to the dedication of the Rockingham community.
The Catalpa Festival, launched in 2023, has expanded each year, and 2025 promises to be its most immersive iteration yet. The festival will act as a dress rehearsal for the grand sesquicentennial celebrations in 2026, marking 150 years since the escape. Visitors in 2025 can expect a packed two-day program of history, music, and community engagement from 28 to 30 March.

On Saturday, the Village Green will host Gaelic football matches, hurling displays, and ongoing family-friendly activities. Food and drink vendors will add to the lively atmosphere, while the evening will feature a free screening of The Catalpa Rescue and a performance by the Australian Navy Band at Churchill Park.
Sunday will dive deeper into history, starting with a Fremantle Prison “breakout” breakfast. Cyclists will participate in the Catalpa Cycling Dash to Rockingham, where Rockingham Beach will transform into a living historical display.
Highlights include a live reenactment of the Catalpa Rescue, complete with actors, ships, and cannons, alongside performances of traditional Irish music and dance.
The festival’s mission is to raise awareness of this fascinating chapter in colonial history while fostering pride in Rockingham and delivering economic and tourism benefits to the region. Storyboards, historical artifacts, and a staged retelling of the escape will create an authentic, immersive experience for visitors.
Ships like the Leeuwin and Lissa will represent the Catalpa and its British pursuer, the Georgette, tying the history back to its maritime roots.

As the community gears up for 2025, preparations are already underway for the landmark 2026 event.
The sesquicentennial celebrations will involve multi-city events in Rockingham, Fremantle, and Bunbury. These will include partnerships with tourism groups in the USA and Ireland, attracting international visitors keen to experience this dramatic tale of freedom firsthand.
The Catalpa Festival is more than just a tribute to the past; it’s a vibrant celebration of culture, resilience, and the enduring ties between nations. With its mix of historical storytelling, community activities, and live performances, the festival promises to captivate attendees and bring a remarkable piece of Western Australian history into the spotlight once more.
Be part of the adventure that’s shaping up to be a cornerstone of Australia’s cultural calendar.
