The Fleurieu Folk Festival is back for its 18th year this October in the picturesque town of Willunga on the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia. As the largest folk music event in the state, the festival offers a weekend packed with music, dance, and cultural activities.

This year’s lineup features an impressive array of local, interstate, and international artists.

This year’s festival has an exciting new addition. Festival director Valerie Corfield told Anglo&Celtic: “This year we also have Dougstock Stadium where 10 local acts have been invited to perform on Saturday and Sunday.”

Scottish folk legend Alan Reid, a former member of the Battlefield Band, is set to perform, offering a rich repertoire of traditional Scottish tunes and original compositions that have delighted audiences worldwide.

UK folk singer Edwina Hayes, known for her heartfelt songs and engaging presence, will also take the stage. Hayes has toured extensively in the UK and Australia, and her return to the Australian folk scene is highly anticipated. Her previous performances at festivals like Port Fairy Folk Festival have earned her a dedicated following, and her set at Fleurieu is expected to be a highlight of the weekend.

For those who enjoy a fusion of Celtic and global sounds, Tim Scanlan & Mana Okubo bring a blend of ancient Celtic melodies with modern beats. This duo, featuring Scanlan’s multi-instrumental talents and Okubo’s dynamic fiddle playing, promises to deliver an unforgettable performance that bridges cultures and genres.

Adding to the festival’s English connections, the Adelaide Empire Band will perform traditional English dance tunes, inviting festival-goers to join in the lively atmosphere. The band is known for its rollicking big band sound.

Traditional English dance will also be showcased by the Adelaide Morris Men and Scarlet Robin, with their vibrant and energetic Morris dances.

With workshops, dance sessions, blackboard concerts, and even a Busk Stop for impromptu performances, the Fleurieu Folk Festival is more than just a music event; it’s a celebration of community, culture, and the enduring appeal of folk traditions. The festival also features local food, wine, and market stalls, making it a true feast for the senses.

The 2024 Fleurieu Folk Festival is set to be a weekend to remember.
