I recently had a long conversation with Ron Swan, the driving force behind Clans on the Coast. This not-for-profit festival supports local charities, and Ron’s passion for Scottish heritage is unmistakable. He’s the kind of bloke who’ll strike up a chat with strangers on the street about Scotland’s influence on Raymond Terrace and the surrounding area.
Ron loves teaching people about their heritage, encouraging everyone to explore their family history and not take it for granted. He’s been doing this for years and is truly a rare gem.
Most of the community events and groups I’ve been involved with over the years have been driven by someone like Ron — people who see beyond themselves and focus on the bigger picture. They do it for the love of people, knowing it’s important work and that they have the skills and drive to help. Their passion is infectious.
Another legend spreading joy is Barry Nisbet, who will bring the fun of Sessions and Sail to Australia next year. Ship’s captain Barry has been sailing around Scotland and Ireland with his hearty crew of musicians, carrying their cargo of culture to small islands and ports along the coastline. We look forward to welcoming them to Sydney in 2025.
Tour announcements came thick and fast this month! Among them was Crowded House being named as the headliners of Byron Bay Bluesfest. 2025 was to be the last Bluesfest, but now a campaign is underway hoping to save the iconic festival. Since launching Anglo&Celtic magazine, I have seen many festivals cancelled across Australia, organisers reporting that they are struggling to sell tickets, tours being canned and live music venues closed. Times are tough for many. Let’s hope that Bluesfest can be saved. You can help the campaign by signing a petition here.
Enjoy the magazine!
