In this edition, we are celebrating Clydesdale horses, which were brought to Australia by early European settlers, particularly Scottish immigrants.

The breed originated in Lanarkshire, where they were used for agricultural work, transportation, and heavy hauling. Scots brought their knowledge of horse breeding and their preference for Clydesdales to Australia. These horses were valuable assets for various industries in the developing colonies.

The town of Boonah, on the Scenic Rim in Queensland, will celebrate these beautiful giants, along with Scottish culture, at its Clydesdale Spectacular this month. This edition’s gorgeous front page picture is from Facebook.com/clydiespectacular.

Speaking of giants, literary behemoth Ulysses will come to life across the country this June on Bloomsday. This annual literary event commemorates and celebrates the life and work of Irish writer James Joyce and his novel Ulysses. The event is named after Leopold Bloom, the protagonist of Ulysses, and the day on which the events of the novel take place — 16th June 1904, in Dublin. Bloomsday has grown into a global phenomenon, with celebrations taking place around the world.

There have been some very exciting tour announcements in the past few weeks. From Joanna Lumley to Bear Grylls to the stars of the Eurovision Song Contest, it’s a smorgasbord of entertainment. Eric Idle is coming back to our shores after a bout with pancreatic cancer – it must be his habit of always looking on the bright side of life that’s powering the comic genius.

Happy 8th birthday to Finn McCool’s in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. They have been consistent supporters of this magazine and we are very grateful to them. They are a business that’s genuinely interested in giving back to the Irish community. They’ll be celebrating their birthday all day on Friday, 28th June, with headliners ‘kick-arse Irish band’ The Gathering and other live acts and DJs.
