As we celebrate World Whisky Day today, May 18th, it’s not just Scotland taking the limelight.
England and Wales are witnessing a resurgence in whisky production.
In centuries past, England boasted a flourishing whisky tradition, but by the 19th century, increased taxes and Scottish competition dimmed its light. Yet, in the late 20th century, a renaissance began. The English Whisky Co’s St George’s Distillery, opened in 2006, marked a turning point. Today, distilleries dot England’s map, from The Lakes Distillery in the scenic Lake District to East London Liquor Company in the bustling capital.
Wales, too, witnessed a whisky resurgence. Penderyn Distillery, founded in 2000, reignited Welsh whisky’s flame. Nestled in the Brecon Beacons, Penderyn pioneered premium single malts with innovative methods like the unique Faraday still.
Meanwhile, Australia’s whisky scene is gaining recognition for its innovative approach, with distilleries across the country producing unique and flavourful expressions.
And let’s not forget Ireland, home to the iconic Irish whiskey, where traditional craftsmanship meets modern innovation.
There’s a diverse world of whisky waiting to be explored beyond Scotland’s borders.
World Whisky Day is the perfect time to raise a glass and celebrate the global whisky community. Sláinte!
