Sydney is ready to shine. The world has all eyes on the Sydney New Year’s Eve fireworks, as usual, but that’s just the beginning of a very busy month of festivities for the city.

With Australia Day also coming up, Sydney is gearing up for Australia Day Live 2024 featuring live musical performances choreographed to a flotilla of yachts, projections on the Sydney Opera House sails, and stunning pyrotechnic displays over Sydney Harbour.

Sydney Festival is also happening this month with a multitude of performers. Pet Shop Boys fan Michael Griffiths will be performing his show in tribute to the English duo, It’s A Sin: Songs of Love and Shame, as part of the festival. The Pet Shop Boys themselves will be hitting Australian cinemas this month with their Dreamworld Greatest Hits live film.

A whole host of English acts are about to arrive on our shores – Dire Straits Legacy, The Human League, Go West and From The Jam are featured in this issue. Plenty more will be arriving in the coming weeks and months, like Ralph McTell, The Darkness, The Chemical Brothers, Elvis Costello, The Streets. Did we mention Louis Tomlinson? (Cue screams).

We were delighted to be contacted by our friends at Esperance Stonehenge to let us know that Bill Bailey had visited the amazing site to feature it in his latest travel series. You’ll find the story on page 8.

Our beautiful cover photo is of the Lyons Highland Dance Studio and it comes courtesy of Overnewton Castle in Victoria, which held a Scottish Festival recently. It was featured in our November edition. We have a picture spread from the festival on page 28.

And speaking of Highland dancers, meet Dee Thomson on page 9. Dee went from years on the dance circuit to her new calling, helping children with autism and their families through therapy camps. What amazing work Dee and her crew are doing!

Scottish bard Rabbie Burns will be celebrated this month and you’ll find a guide to what’s on for Burns Night on page 12.

There will also be a wealth of leftfield, fun events happening across the country for our national day. Everything from cockroach races to ute rallys. For a guide to what’s on, go to http://www.australiaday.com.au.

Plans are already afoot for our February and March editions. We will have St David’s Day for Wales and St Piran’s Day for Cornwall featured in our February edition. With St Patrick’s Day also coming up and a huge influx of Irish acts on their way, there’s going to be mighty craic. Happy New Year!
