Kieran Rice, Isabella Rice and Consul General Rosie Keane wth the An Post stamp of Sydney Opera House.

An Post, the Irish Postal Service, has unveiled a captivating stamp to honour the Sydney Opera House’s 50th anniversary.

The stamp commemorates the pivotal role played by Peter Rice, an Irishman and structural engineer, in fashioning the Opera House’s revolutionary ‘white sails’ roof. The design is a masterful fusion of mathematical precision and artistic intuition, transforming concrete, steel, and glass into an internationally renowned architectural marvel.

This iconic symbol of architectural brilliance was celebrated on-site at the Sydney Opera House, graced by the presence of dignitaries, including Consul General of Ireland in Sydney, Rosie Keane, Kieran Rice (son of the visionary Irish structural engineer, Peter Rice), Isabella Rice, and Kerryn Coker, co-chair of Arup Australasia, the original design company.

Kieran Rice, Peter Rice’s son, shared his family’s appreciation, stating, “We, Peter Rice’s family, are all deeply touched by the recognition of his contribution to the Sydney Opera House’s design.” He expressed that the stamp was a beautiful tribute to his father’s legacy.

Consul General Rosie Keane underscored the opera house’s enduring global appeal and the pride of the Irish community in Peter Rice’s significant role.

An Post CEO David McRedmond highlighted the celebration of Irish contributions to world-class architecture and engineering.

The stamp, designed by Irish artist David Rooney, features a stunning portrayal of the opera house, emphasising its unique architecture and its connection to Indigenous Australian art.

An eloquent quote by Peter Rice adorns the First Day Cover envelope, encapsulating his visionary career. It reads: “The courage you need is the courage to start. Once launched, then each step can be evolved naturally.”

It’s a fitting tribute to an architectural masterpiece and the Irish engineer who helped shape it.
