Irish TV show Kin is making waves Down Under, earning itself a legion of Aussie fans. But folks here were furious when subtitles being used to help Australians understand the thick Dublin accents suddenly did a vanishing act from their screens.
This gangland drama, which has viewers glued to their tellys as they follow the Kinsella crime clan, had viewers hooked. But the strong accents, delivered by the likes of Charlie Cox and Aidan Gillen, left some viewers Australians scratching their heads.
Streaming on SBS On Demand, subtitles were put on the episodes to give everyone a fair go at understanding the plot. But, as luck would have it, a bungle occurred, and after the third episode of season one, the subtitles went walkabout.
The Twitterati were in a tizzy, with one bloke saying, ‘Watched four episodes and love it. But hard to follow with the strong accents.’ Another chimed in, ‘I love this show but why are there subtitles on just three episodes?’ And then there was, ‘What’s going wrong with the subtitles on Kin? They seem to either load a few days later or not at all. Between the gangland mumbling and the accents, it is hard to work out what nefarious activities they’re up to next.’
But then another said, ‘We got the subtitles back. It’s worth persisting with it.’
Kin’s currently the eighth most streamed show in Australia. It is available to stream now on SBS On Demand.
