An amazing viewing platform and information centre, costing millions, has been opened at the site of Ned Kelly’s last stand.
In the heart of Glenrowan in Victoria, the captivating tourism experience, called The Ned Kelly Discovery Hub has opened its doors.
Ned Kelly was an infamous bushranger, the son of Irish parents. In June 1880, Victorian police captured Ned Kelly after a siege at the Glenrowan Inn. Ned Kelly wore a suit of homemade metal armor during the seige, which made him nearly impervious to the shots fired at him, and it allowed Ned Kelly to continue fighting even when he was heavily outnumbered.
Ned Kelly only surrendered when he was seriously injured. His armor became an enduring symbol of his defiance and the dramatic events of that fateful day.
The other members of the Kelly Gang were killed in the siege.
Ned Kelly was condemned by Judge Redmond Barry, who was born in County Cork, Ireland. He later emigrated to Australia and became a prominent figure in the legal system in Victoria. Barry presided over the trial of Ned Kelly and ultimately sentenced him to death by hanging. The execution took place in Melbourne Gaol on November 11, 1880.
Ned Kelly’s famous last words before his execution by hanging were reportedly: “Such is life”.
At the Ned Kelly Discovery Hub, the story of Ned Kelly comes to life with the help of modern technology. This immersive experience, located in Lions Park at the heart of the Glenrowan-Heritage Precinct, plunges you right into the action of Ned Kelly’s siege and capture in 1880. It’s not just a stroll through history; it’s a chance to live it.
A viewing platform contains an impressive 20-metre, nine-tonne structural steel roof which was assembled on the ground before being lifted in one piece and secured to the building’s frame. You can take in breathtaking panoramic views of the very spots that witnessed the Kelly story unfold.
Interactive storytelling gives you a taste of what it was like for hostages, police, and Indigenous trackers during those siege events.
This Discovery Hub gives you a chance to stand where history was made.
The grand launch was held on September 16th with a family day of entertainment.
