It’s been four years since Happy Mondays’ last visit to Australia and we’re not twisting your melon, man, when we tell you they’re coming back this month.

The iconic English indie rock pioneers are gearing up for a triumphant return with their Twenty-Four Hour Party People Greatest Hits Tour.

Happy Mondays’ journey to fame is a wild tale that encapsulates the spirit of Madchester, the British music scene that emerged in the late 1980s.

The band hails from the northern English city of Manchester, a place that, at the time, became synonymous with club culture, baggy rhythms, and an abundance of the drug ecstasy. Born into a working-class world of limited opportunities, the members of Happy Mondays came together against this backdrop.

Happy Mondays’ rise to fame is closely tied to the legendary Factory Records, an independent record label that played a pivotal role in the Manchester music scene (Joy Division, New Order) and New Order’s infamous nightclub, The Hacienda.

Their music was a unique blend of northern soul, Detroit acid house, football chants, and traditional British pop. Lead singer Shaun Ryder’s distinctive, often stream-of-consciousness lyrics added a layer of eccentricity to their sound.

The band’s third album was their massive breakthrough, Pills ‘n’ Thrills & Bellyaches remains the definitive baggy record. Released in 1990, it catapulted Happy Mondays to stardom. The album’s luscious mix of post-punk influences and Shaun Ryder’s humorous and satirical lyrics resonated with fans, earning it platinum status in the UK.

The Mondays’ wild behavior, substance abuse, and headline-grabbing antics became a staple of the British tabloids. They epitomised the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle with their extravagant spending and outrageous interviews.

The current lineup of the band includes founding members vocalist Shaun Ryder, guitarist Mark Day, drummer Gary Whelan, and longtime co-vocalist Rowetta. They are joined by dancer and percussionist Mark “Bez” Berry and Dan Broad, the musical director.

“We’re thrilled to be heading back to Australia,” says Shaun Ryder. “The fans there have always shown us so much love, and we can’t wait to give them a show they’ll never forget.”

Rowetta, sharing her enthusiasm on Facebook, said, “I can’t wait to come back with the boys to one of our favourite places. We had a great time last time.”

Fans can expect a memorable performance featuring all the indie acid-house-rock hits, including classics like Step On, Kinky Afro, Loose Fit, Hallelujah, and the iconic Twenty Four Hour Party People. Expect a night to remember reliving the glory days of Madchester.
