Sydney chef Toby Wilson is hoping to win the World Porridge Making Championship.
As the 30th Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship approaches, all eyes are on chef Toby Wilson, last year’s runner-up from Sydney.
He’s armed with a spurtle and a dream—to seize the coveted Golden Spurtle this time around and bring the prestigious title Down Under.
Taking place in the charming village of Carrbridge in the heart of the Scottish Highlands on October 7th, the competition sees promising porridge enthusiasts from around the world take part in a global porridge showdown.
Competitors are flying in from all corners of the globe, representing countries as diverse as Indonesia, Pakistan, the USA, and Zimbabwe.
Toby shared his excitement, saying, “In a world of whatever the f*** is going on, it’s pretty nice to think of being in a tiny village in Scotland on a river, cooking some old-fashioned oats.”
Adding to Australia’s porridge pride is Lilian Campbell, a first-time entrant whose participation adds a dash of excitement to the mix. Clearly, the world is catching on to the porridge phenomenon.
Scotland, famous for its legendary porridge recipes, is like the holy grail for porridge lovers. And a spurtle is the secret wand of the porridge-making world.
The Golden Spurtle, a traditional tool used to stir porridge as it cooks, is the symbol of excellence in this competition.
Contestants must conjure the perfect plate of porridge using only three ingredients — oats, salt, and water. The championship also features a speciality award for the porridge prodigy who crafts the most imaginative dish incorporating oatmeal.
