As the Irish & Celtic Music Festival approaches, the town of Yass is buzzing with excitement, and at the centre of it all is festival director Janno Scanes, the driving force behind this beloved annual event. Set in a delightful rural valley with a rich heritage in Irish and Celtic traditions, Yass provides the perfect backdrop for a celebration of music, dance, and poetry.
Janno said the town has a long history of early settlement by Irish free settlers.
“Many orphan girls came here during the Irish potato famine, many of them becoming the matriarchs of families whose descendants still call Yass home,” she said.
Janno, along with her dedicated committee of volunteers, works tirelessly to organise an unforgettable experience for festivalgoers. From curating a diverse line-up of talented performers to coordinating workshops and events, Janno’s passion for the arts shines through in every aspect of the festival.
As the third oldest town in New South Wales, Yass offers historical charm and scenic beauty, making it an enchanting setting for a music festival.
The mostly walking precinct in the town’s centre becomes a hub of merriment, with unique venues hosting music, poetry, and Celtic markets. The historic buildings around town also become festival venues. The community’s warmth and hospitality add to the festival’s allure, making visitors feel right at home.
With Janno’s guidance, the event has gained national recognition and attracts music lovers from all corners of the country.
So, if you’re looking for good craic and a weekend filled with enchanting melodies, join Janno and the Yass Valley community at the Irish & Celtic Music Festival from September 15th to 17th.
