
Professional kite flyers and makers will descend on Bondi Beach to show off kites big and small to the soundtrack of concerts in Bondi Park on Sunday, September 10th.
Festival of the Winds celebrates 45 years of kite making and flying traditions, this year’s festival promises an extraordinary experience for all, with captivating performances including English Cotswolds folk dance group Black Joak Morris and the cross-cultural sensation, Ganithapan.
Commencing at 11 am, Festival of the Winds will witness the arrival of professional kite flyers and makers, gracing the shoreline with kites of all sizes and designs, painting the sky with vibrant hues. The event will feature a full-day program of entertainment at Bondi Pavilion and Bondi Park, offering cultural showcases, delectable food stalls, and a lively atmosphere.
Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, has enthusiastically endorsed the event, emphasising its inclusive nature. She stated, “Expect a ripper of a show, and that it will be a great day of fun and entertainment for families and people of all ages.”
This year’s festival boasts a diverse lineup of live music and performances at the main stage in Bondi Park, catering to a wide range of musical tastes. From Indigenous folk band the Stiff Gins to the explosive 14-piece Latin Big Band, Mucho Mambo, there’s something to captivate every festival-goer.
The event will also feature the mesmerising cross-cultural performance by Ganithapan, blending elements from Indian, Irish, Chinese, and various other cultural traditions.
In addition to the captivating kite show, the iconic Bondi Pavilion will host cultural showcases, symbolising a return to vibrancy following its recent restoration. Mayor Masselos expressed her pride in the community space’s renewal and its role in events like the Festival of the Winds.
