A heart-warming spectacle unfolded at Coogee Beach in Sydney as hundreds of Irish fans came together to spell out #COYGIG (Come on You Girls in Green), showing their unwavering support for the Ireland women’s football team ahead of the Women’s World Cup campaign.
The striking visual display also carried a deeper purpose – raising awareness and funds for Keith’s Closet.
Keith’s Closet, founded by compassionate Irish Sydneysider Keith Donnelly, is a charity dedicated to supporting those accessing mental health services. The organisation provides a walk-in wardrobe experience, offering new and high-quality second-hand clothing, as well as toiletries, accessories, and homewares, to patients upon admission or discharge from mental health facilities.
Mental health nurse Keith told us: “It was a fantastic day with an electric atmosphere, and it was a credit to the Ireland fans who turned out in their hundreds. We are so grateful.”
Keith hopes to soon make his charity initiative go nationwide. Donations can be made to Keith’s Closet here.
Unfortunately, the Ireland team were knocked out of the World Cup after putting on gutsy performances against Australia, Canada and Nigeria. They lost 1-0 to Australia in Sydney and 2-1 to Canada in Perth, with a brilliant goal taken by Katie McCabe from the corner. They also had a 0-0 draw with Nigeria in their final World Cup game in Brisbane.
